Kaduna University Lecturers Call Off Strike following the Governor's intervention.

The Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike, which began on Tuesday, following the intervention of Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani.

The strike, which was prompted by longstanding unresolved issues with the university management dating back to 2009 and 2017, was officially called off on Sunday after the governor’s mediation.

In a statement, ASUU KASU Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, acknowledged the state government’s goodwill in addressing the dispute. He noted that the government had promptly released funds to cover 60 percent of the withheld salaries from September 2017 and the SIWES supervision allowance for five sessions. Additionally, the government committed to a timeline for settling five months' worth of withheld salaries (May to September 2022), promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and group life assurance.

Dr. Adamu further stated that the government has demonstrated commitment to implementing the wage award and granting autonomy to Kaduna State University.

The union expressed appreciation to Governor Sani for his swift intervention and leadership in resolving the crisis. ASUU also highlighted that the governor’s approach marks a significant departure from previous administrations, where lecturers faced victimization for engaging in legitimate strike actions.
