APC withdraws from Osun LG poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has pulled out of the local government election set for February 22.

In a letter dated February 17, APC State Publicity Secretary Alao Kamorudeen informed the State Independent Electoral Commission of the party's decision ¹. The APC cited the February 10 Court of Appeal judgment, which reinstated its chairmen and councillors, as the reason for its withdrawal.

According to the letter, the Court of Appeal's judgment in Akure nullified the Federal High Court's earlier ruling, allowing the elected officers to resume their posts. This means the seats are no longer vacant, making the election unnecessary and unlawful.

The APC's withdrawal comes amid a crisis with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the Court of Appeal judgment. While the PDP claimed the judgment didn't reinstate the sacked APC chairmen and councillors, the APC insisted on their return to office.

The dispute escalated into violence on Monday, with both parties claiming control of local government secretariats across the state. The police confirmed six deaths and multiple injuries during the clashes.
